Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the use of Surface Electromyography bio-feedback with Mendelsohn maneuver on suprahyoid muscle activity of dysphagia in head and neck cancer patients. We selected the 3 patients who met inclusion criteria from those who had been diagnosed dysphagia after treatments for cancer. The results have shown that all subjects increased the level of the suprahyoid muscles activity and was shortened the average triggering time of pharyngeal swallow when applying Mendelsohn maneuver with surface electromyography bio-feedback. In contrast to the improvement of swallowing function after the intervention in a subject with onset period of less than 2 years, the subjects with onset period of more than 5 years deteriorated overall swallowing function through the score of the Videofluoroscopic Dysphagia Scale and the Clinical Dysphagia Scale. These results indicated that the duration of the diseases may affect the recovery of the swallowing function.
